Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I find kittens?

Assess, wait and observe, and then act! Check out this handy flyer from Nassau Humane Society on the steps to take when finding kittens.

I haven’t seen a mother cat. How can I foster kittens on my own?

If you find a kitten or litter of kittens that have been orphaned that you’d like to foster on your own, the kittens and our shelter would like to thank you! During kitten season, shelters quickly become overcrowded with kittens. Keeping space open for kittens who need severe medical help will allow us to save more lives while you foster healthy babies until they are ready to be adopted. Nassau Humane Society is happy to help provide supplies for fostering.

Below are some resources on how to care for orphaned kittens:

How old is this kitten?

Great question! Luckily, there’s a great chart to help you navigate the growth of a kitten. Click here!

I found these kittens, but I can’t keep them. Can you help?

As long as the kittens were found within the city limits of Fernandina Beach, Nassau Humane Society is more than happy to help. All animals found outside of the city limits will need to contact the shelter for their appropriate jurisdiction (Nassau County - Nassau County Animal Services; Jacksonville - Animal Care and Protective Services).

We ask that you understand that animal intakes during kitten season are high, and that we may need to schedule an intake appointment for an animal or litter of kittens so we may make the necessary space. Please call 904-321-1647 to schedule an intake appointment.
